Ingram to miss time after surgery
University of Alabama running back Mark Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, had an arthroscopic procedure done on Tuesday morning, and will miss Saturday's season opener against San Jose State and possibly more.
The knee injury occurred in Monday's practice.
Head coach Nick Saban announced that Ingram would miss the game in a statement on Tuesday.
The Crimson Tide medical staff decided to go ahead with the procedure so the sophomore back would not encounter problems as the season went on.
“It was a situation where everyone involved thought it would be better to take care of now, so he would not have any issues later in the season,” Saban said.
Ingram ran for 1,658 yards last season with 17 touchdowns as Alabama won the national title.
Number one Crimson Tide will look to sophomore Trent Richardson to carry the load. Richardson finished last season with 751 yards from 145 carries, with eight touchdowns.
Alabama has a tough September schedule so their fans are hoping Ingram can return to his old self.
On 11 September the no. 19 Penn State Nittany Lions travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Bama. Then the Tide travel to Duke and Arkansas before hosting number four Florida in a rematch of last year's SEC championship game.
Ingram's status would be day to day according to the school. Saban is confident that Ingram will be back very soon.
“We will make every decision on the future baed on what's best for Mark and his career as we consult with Dr. [Lyle] Cain and Dr. [James] Andrews on his progress,” Saban said. “This is not an injury that will affect Mark's future ability to make a full recovery in a relatively short time frame.”
Eddie Lacy, a freshman, will be the backup to Richardson in Saturday's game.
Ingram, Alabama's first Heisman Trophy winner, is predicted to be a high draft pick in next year's NFL draft.
