Inground swimming pool main drain cover..how to get it screwed back over the drain?

Ok, I know this is not a common situation, but the cover to the main drain came off, and it's apparent that it's held in place by two screws...however, outside of draining the pool completely, how do I get two new screws in there? or do I have to drain the pool? any help would be appreciated.

  1. if you can hold your breath for a few minutes, using a divers weight belt and a mask(you can rent them) may help-otherwise you will need an air tank too....next time the pool is drained, take a masonary drill bit and drill deeper holes for longer, bigger stainless steel screws so it will not come loose again

  2. I spent a fair chunk of my youth underwater with an airhose from an oilless paint sprayer compressor between my teeth, like a gal at WikiWachi Springs.  The extra air burbled out and when I wanted air, I grabbed some.  I was in 12-18 feet of water and knew the rules for coming to the surface when using gas under water to keep from damaging lungs.

OTOH, you could ask around for someone with an aqualung to come over and spend 5-10 minutes on the bottom fixing it.
