So a couple weeks ago i started to have a pain in my big toe but i thought nothing of so i just went on with my life. Then a week ago, to my surprise, the pain had become more intense...with blood, ugh! So tonight i decide to some action and i cut my toenail, first i soaked it for awhile then i lifted my toenail up and cut! I cut it along the paining side in a diagonal line, but even though some of the pain and swelling has died down there is still that annoying pain is my toe!! So did i do something wrong and if i did are there other steps i can take to help?

fyi: going to the doctors is a last option, id much rather do it myself.. Thanks!

  1. well i would suggest you go to the nail salon. The manicurists can help cut the ingrown toes nail. The thing is you have to visit nail salon everymonthh to cut that thing out of ur toes.  hope it help

  2. I had an ingrown toenail when i was 13, I ignored it for months and wished the pain would go away (or the ingrown part of the nail would grow out on its own). This never happened.  I also tried a couple of times to do what you did but this only made matters worse.  It eventually got infected and started to leak pus.  I found that changing my socks many times a day and a daily peroxide treatment helped with the infection but not the ingrown nail itself.  I eventually caved in and notified my parents who took me to a podiatrist.  They shot my toe a few times with novacaine and cut out the half of my big toenail that was ingrown.  The moral of the story........don't try this at home, it will probably just get worse so your last option should be your first in this case.

  3. You goofed.  You should cut it across and then cut out a "V" in the middle of the toenail.  That will make it grow towards the center instead of growing into the flesh.  And instead of cutting it really short, you should leave a little of the nail and then put a tiny piece of a cotton ball under the nail in the corner where it hurts.  That will keep the nail out of the flesh. Do this every day for a couple of weeks  until the nail is growing towards the center to close up that "V"".  Also, for the pain, put some Preparation H on the sore area.  I know, that's not what it's intended for, but it will numb it a little and take any swelling down, thus relieving the pain a little.  Buy shoes that fit properly, with a larger toe box.  I've3 had three ingrown toe nails and I know they hurt like the dickens.  A doctor told me what to do for them and it has worked.  If this doesn't get better soon, get to a doctor and he will have to remove the nail.  Good luck.  Hey, where should I send the bill???

  4. Improperly cutting the nail is likely what caused it to be ingrown in the first place. Cutting out the ingrowing piece is a temporary fix; you can't get to the nail matrix, so as the nail grows back, it will continue growing in. If you wanted to treat it at home, you should've followed the steps shown here: http://firstaid.webmd.com/ingrown_toenai... with more information here: http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-t... which encourage the nail to grow properly. You can still follow those steps, so that as the nail grows back it will grow properly.

For the moment, the pain is still there for a couple possible reasons: one, you didn't remove all of the ingrown nail; or two, you removed it all but the act of digging it out and cutting it has irritated your toe. You can soak your toe in cold water or ice it (with a washcloth or something similar between your skin and the ice) to numb your toe and decrease swelling. After that, or instead of it, you can apply neosporin (antibacterial to prevent infection where you cut out the nail, plus it has an analgesic for pain relief) and pop a band-aid over it.

  5. I hate ingrown toenails.. i get them all the time! You did what I do, and the pain will go away in a couple of days...I hope this helps!

  6. yep i get them to :( just keep doing that but if i gets worse or no better go to the doctor because somethimes it can get VERY bad ^_^ hope i helped
