Question:

Inheriting Peerage Titles?

I have a few questions regarding peerage.

If a duke has three children, a son, a daughter and another son, his oldest son inherits his title of Duke and the other children are referred to as Lord's. If the daughter marries a man without a title does she keep her title or is it dropped? Do her children get styled as Lord and Lady?

Also those that are referred to as Honorable, are their children also titled Honorable or does that cease?

  1. the oldest son wll be called the Duke and when he retres or dies the younger son will inherit the title... after his death the oldest son of the oldest brother gets the title.

I guess thats how it happens because that is how kingship works.

  2. If a duke's,marquess',earl's daughter marries a man without a title, she keeps her's.Her children do not have titles because the father has none.Generally, titles are passed down the male line--the rule of primogeniture.

Children do not take on "The Honorable" from their parents' "The Honorable."

Correction to an answer: The duke's eldest son takes on the next title down that his father bears. The eldest son becomes a duke when his fatther dies. For example let's say that the Duke of Rothesay is also Marquess Standstall,Earl of Seale,Viscount Teale,Baron Rodney. His eldest son takes on the next title down: Marquess Standstall. The Marquess Standstall will only become the Duke of Rothesay when his father dies.

  3. BEC is correct. Only the heir to a peerage gets to transmit a title to his heirs. His sisters and his younger brothers get to call themselves "Lord Peter" and "Lady Mary" or "The Honourable Whoever", (depending what rank of the peerage Daddy is) "by courtesy". That means that they don't actually own the title, but are just lent it, so to speak, during their lifetimes.
