Inigo Cervantes crushes Oleksandr Nedovyesov to enter semis – Copa Sevilla 2012
Fifth seed, Inigo Cervantes, devastated the Ukrainian contender, Oleksandr Nedovyesov, with a breadstick at the Copa Sevilla 2012 on Thursday. He jolted down a 6-1, 7-6(1) victory against the world number 283 to charge into the final four at this outdoor
clay court tournament taking place in Seville, Spain.
The seeded Spaniard unveiled his true form at the Real Club de Tenis Betis. He reeled off seven games in a row to carve out the victory in straight sets in one hour and 23 minutes. After recording this win, Cervantes convincingly secured a spot in the semi-finals.
The 22-year-old unleashed flurry of groundstrokes after entering the Spanish courts at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event. After the Ukrainian kept his serve in the opening game, Cervantes winded up the proceeding six games
and eventually sealed the opener with a breadstick. He plucked his entire serves without facing any trouble and converted three out of four break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 146th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Cervantes carried his rhythm in the following set. He got the coveted break in the fourth game and jumped to a 4-1 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the ninth game, the Spaniard
stayed focused and pro-longed the set to a tie-breaker. He cruised to a 4-0 lead in it before closing out the victory with a 7-6(1) success.
All in all, the Spanish rising star struck nine aces to dominate. He also clobbered a better first serve share of 66 per cent as compared to his opponent’s 57 per cent and impressively availed 28 out of 35 points on it.
Cervantes will square off against his sixth seeded compatriot, Tommy Robredo, in the last four. The former world number five recorded a 7-6(4), 2-6, 1-0 retirement victory against Argentina’s Facundo Arguello to set up this meeting.
The Serbian contender, Boris Pashanski, will join Cervantes in the semi-finals. He needed one hour and 24 minutes to triumph over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets. Pashanski required a single break of serve in each set to prevail, eventually
sealing the deal with a 6-4, 6-4 success.
