Inigo Cervantes slays Taro Daniel to enter quarters – Copa Sevilla 2012
Fifth seed, Inigo Cervantes, devastated the Japanese challenger, Taro Daniel, with a bagel at the Copa Sevilla 2012 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 6-0, 6-3 victory against the world number 331 to charge into the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Seville, Spain.
The Spanish seed needed 66 minutes to overpower Daniel and advance into the final eight at this outdoor clay court tournament.
Cervantes went berserk after entering the Real Club de Tenis Betis. He unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to reel off six games in a row. He impressively warded off all four breakpoints he came across to keep his entire serves. The Spaniard capitalised on three out of four break chances to pull out the opener with a bagel.
Ranked 146th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Cervantes maintained his intensity in the following set. He cashed in the lone break chance in the second game to leap to a 3-0 lead. The Spaniard plucked his remaining serves without facing any hindrance and eventually sealed the set with a 6-3 win.
On the whole, Cervantes outshined the teenager in every department of tennis. He fired nine aces and despite producing a lower first serve share of 65 per cent as compared to his rival’s 80 per cent, the Spaniard impressively availed 27 out of 32 points on it.
Cervantes will square off against the Ukrainian contestant, Oleksandr Nedovyesov. The Ukrainian rallied past Belgium’s Yannick Mertens in a three-set nail-biter to set up this battle.
The sixth seed Tommy Robredo also stole the spotlight later that day. He re-ignited his old spark to pull out a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory against Netherlands’ Nick Van Der Meer.
The former world number five, Robredo required a single break of serve to triumph over the Dutchman. He capitalised on one out of six break chances to seal the deal in one hour and 26 minutes. The veteran was never threatened with any barrier and amazingly marked 33 out of 38 points on it.
Robredo will face off the Argentinean challenger, Facundo Arguello, who crushed Netherlands’ Jesse Huta Galung with a breadstick to progress.
