Initialization Problem

KDC-MP925 in 98 VW Jetta. When the ignition is switched on, the unit doesn't open on its own anymore, the spot on the faceplate needs to be pressed. About 90% of the time, it will open halfway and then stop without powering on. When the SRC or faceplate spot is pressed again, it goes through an up/down in/out cycle and then usually stops again. After repeating the process a number of times, eventually it comes on and works fine.Sometimes during this process, the buttons light up, but there is no display. Sometimes I can remove the faceplate and everything returns to its OFF position with the DSI blinking, sometimes not.All ribbon cables appear to be intact, and I'm fairly sure they're OK as everything works when it does come on. The only thing that acts funny is the up/down panel control. Once it's moved to its lowest position, the up/down won't adjust anymore and will sometimes cause the unit to shut down with everything remaining in the open position. The same thing habbens with a different mainboard, so I *think* I've got it narrowed down to the sub-assembly that is responsible for moving the lower control panel, but I'd like to hear the voice of expreience before I start throwing parts / money at this thing.
