Injured Australian Drew Mitchell aims to join the team in Rugby World Cup – Rugby News
Australian winger, Drew Mitchell, who was injured in his last Super Rugby clash against the Queensland Reds, aims to make a come-back to international rugby in the forthcoming World Cup.
Mitchell had received a devastating blow on his right ankle, playing for the Waratahs last weekend. Initial reports were not promising and he was feared to miss the Rugby World Cup due to fitness issues.
Rugby World Cup is kicking-off later this year on September 9 in New Zealand and Waratahs coach is not sure of Mitchell’s recovery within five months.
Waratahs Coach, Chris Hickey, while speaking to reporters told that Mitchell’s injury was of severe nature that could take more than six months to heal. Hickey added that his dislocated ankle was looking very bad, which increases speculations of his inclusion
in the final squad for RWC.
Earlier, the 27-year-old senior campaigner was told that he would be missing rugby for at least six months by the doctors. However, he did not give up his dreams of playing in the biggest event of the sport, hoping to recover from the unfortunate injury.
Mitchell underwent a surgery last Saturday and doctors found the injury not so destructive. According to revised opinion of surgeons, his wounds would recover within 12-14 weeks which would allow him to participate in the RWC.
Talking to the reporters after his surgery, Mitchell said that he was feeling well after the operation. He added that it was really encouraging for him to feel fit before the biggest challenge and added, “I was immediately trying to work out how many weeks
it would be before I could possibly return. It has put me in a better place than what it could have”.
Mitchell asserted that the forthcoming Rugby World Cup was very crucial for him, as they were outclassed in the quarter-final during the previous edition of the event.
Australia have been placed in Pool C along with Ireland, United States, Italy and Russia and they would play their first match of the World Cup against Italy, on September 12.
