Injured Dementieva unlikely to play Wimbledon
Elena Viatcheslavovna Dementieva is a professional tennis player from Russia. Born on 15 October 1981, the Russian tennis star has so far won two Olympic medals in singles and has reached the finals of a Grand Slam Event on two occasions. She achieved her career high ranking as world number three on April 6, 2009. At the moment, Elena is the number one player of Russia.
Born in the city of Moscow, Elena was first rejected at the age of seven by the Central Red Army Tennis Club. Along with this, she was also rejected by the Dynamo Sports Club. After so many rejections, the girl succeeded in getting enrolled at the Spartak Tennis club. Rauza Islanova, the mother of Dinara Safina and Marat Safin coached her for around three years. At the age of 11, Dementieva moved to the Central Red Army Club to prove her worth. Later on in her career, she was coached by her mother with some aid coming in from his brother as well. At the moment, Dementieva has houses in Moscow, Boca Raton, Florida, as well as in Monaco. The tennis player enjoys travelling, reading, snowboarding along with playing base ball at times as well.
Elena was also the cover girl for the January 2009 issue of Marie Claire of Russia. At a very young age of 13, the girl for the first time won her debut tournament Les Petits As, in France and turned professional in 1998. The offensive baseline player has won many important matches from there onwards and is still moving on the same lines.
In the ongoing French Open Tournament, Dementieva had to quit the match due to a calf injury. It is highly unlikely that the tennis player would be able to participate in the Wimbledon tournament due to this injury.
The Russian player pulled out after missing the first set 7-6 (7/3) against Francesca Schiavone before leaving the clay court with tears in her eyes. Dementieva has not managed to win even a single major title after having played 46 Grand Slam Tournaments which is a record in itself. The blonde is also suffering due to her ankle for the last two weeks.
During the All England Club tournament in 2009, Elena Dementieva came extremely close in making her way to the finals after gaining some match points in the semi-final against Serena Williams.
Her injury in the French Open 2010 aggravated the bad run of form as she had to continue playing her game even when it became painful to walk. Elena was hurt for the first time in her match against Anabel Medina Garrigues during the second round of the tournament. As a result, she ended up in a very difficult preposition when it became impossible for her to even move on the clay court.
According to the Russian player, she would not have been able to finish it off even if she had won the first set of the match against the Italian tennis player. The girl tried her best to continue playing even when it was hurting as it was an important tournament for her. Dementieva even managed to win the match against Aleksandra Wozniak at the time when she was close of knocking out of the tournament.
Keeping her injury in mind, Elena took a day off and rest without any practice. But even then, the situation went out of hand for her as the pain killers proved to be useless.
According to the Russian tennis star, she missed some easy chances. Dementieva said, “Although she attempted to make the points lesser and take benefit of her second serve but it’s very hard against Francesca as she always makes you moving all around the court”.
On the Other hand, Schiavone was totally astonished by Dementieva's step of leaving the court.
“When she came to me I never thought she wanted to say this," said the Italian player.
Schiavone was not willing to end it like the way it did but still, the player was fine with the decision keeping Dementieva’s injury in her mind.
