Injured Diamond Harry is latest racehorse to drop out of Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival
Hennessy Gold Cup champion Diamond Harry has been reportedly ruled out of the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup due an injury. The colt was amongst the most prominent contenders of the event.
Trainer Nick Williams said on Friday that Diamond Harry had injured one of his suspensory ligaments and thus, was unfit for racing.
The Cheltenham Festival is the most flaunted racing event of the term. Now that it is just a few days away, all connections are preparing enthusiastically for the festival’s featured races.
Diamond Harry was a 7-1 favourite competitor for the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Coral. Meanwhile, he was as short as 10-1 with the sponsors, along with other racehorses, including the winner of King George, Long Run. These two contenders were being viewed
by the analysts as being able to break the victory chain of champion racehorses, including Imperial Commander, Denman and Kauto Star. Diamond Harry held off these champions when he claimed the Hennessy Gold Cup back in November last season.
His trainer Nick Williams did not send out the racehorse to compete in any racing event since then so that he would be fresh and upbeat for the festival. However, the trainer broke the news to his stable about a week ago that Diamond Harry was not showing
the same enthusiasm as he did before he claimed the Hennessy Cup. This news upset the connections of the racehorse, especially because the prestigious event was just a matter of days now.
When Nick Williams was approached by reporters regarding the development of the racehorse, he told them, “I had not been happy with him and said last week that he had lost his sparkle and it could easily be that something was ailing him... We had four hours
at the vets today and that is how we found out. He will be out for about three to four months.”
