Injured Lotus Renault driver Robert Kubica undergoes fourth surgery – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 team Lotus Renault driver Robert Kubica underwent a fourth surgery in Santa Corona hospital on 12 March, 2011.
The doctors, including Dr Luigi Celli and Dr Francesco Lanza, conducted Kubica’s elbow operation and expected a positive recovery.
Recently, Renault doctor Riccardo Ceccarelli had updated the media that Robert Kubica needs long period to recover from injuries that he sustained in the rally crash in February 2011. However, he had said that Kubica was improving
day-by-day.
Kubica is still under the doctors’ observation in the hospital. After three successful surgeries, Kubica underwent the physiotherapy programme. He was able to move his right wrist and fingers as a result. He now faced an extra surgery on his elbow for the
better movement of his arm.
Following his fourth operation, hospital doctors told the media, “This is not a surprise for us because we know Robert very well. But it is a big surprise for the doctors of the Pietra Ligure hospital - so this is good news because they are satisfied how
he is reacting to the surgery and all the injuries he had. We are quite happy for this strong reaction. This is the first positive thing in a traumatic situation.”
The 26-year-old Kubica missed the remainder of the Formula 1 winter tests following his horrific crash. However, Nick Heidfeld took over driving duties for Renault with his teammate Vitaly Petrov. Kubica received ‘get well soon’ messages from the Formula
1 drivers who were present at the Jerez test session. According to Italian media reports, Kubica needs up to 3 months of rest before stepping on the track.
On the other hand, Kubica considers lucky to himself as he recovered from the serious condition. He insisted, “I am facing a long and difficult rehabilitation, but I am not worried about that.”
As Kubica was severely injured and he underwent four operations, doctors are still unable to give any definite report of his recovery.
Before the fourth surgery, Ceccarelli said, “Robert is very strong and he is recovering in a good way. But, there is a third factor which is nature - how will nature be with him? This is something we cannot say. So it is question that is impossible to answer.”
Both Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso and Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) president Jean Todt visited the hospital, before the final Barcelona test. Alonso was happy ahead of his friend’s fast recovery from massive injuries.
It will be interesting to see how Kubica’s fans response to his replacement, Nick Heidfeld in the 2011 Australian Grand Prix.
