Injured Serena Williams out of U.S. Open 2010!
The world’s best women’s player is out of the U.S. Open 2010. The unfortunate news comes as Serena Williams withdrew from the competition on Friday, saying that it will still take some time to recover after her foot surgery last month.
Williams has won a total of three trophies at the Flushing Meadows in New York out of her overall thirteen major singles tournaments which is the highest in active female tennis players across the globe.
She was knocked out of the semi-finals of the United States Open 2009 as a result of misbehaving with one of the line judges on the court.
“It is a state of extreme sadness that I am being pulled out of a major competition”, clarified Williams.
According to the United States Tennis Association, she is the first top ranked tennis player from the women’s side to skip the United States Open since the rankings started back in 1975.
Serena said that the doctor has advised her to rest and not to play so that her foot recovers soon.
The 28-year-old Williams was injured by a broken glass at a local hotel while she was in Munich a couple of weeks ago. It occurred shortly after capturing her Wimbledon Championship 2010 at the All England Club and prior to her exhibition game against Kim Clijsters that drew a crowd of around 35,681 in Brussels last month.
As a result, Williams had gone through a foot surgery last month in Los Angeles. Earlier, Serena had withdrawn from 3 U.S. Open tune-up championships in which she was planned to participate prior to her appearance at Flushing Meadows this year.
Serena’s withdrawal also implies that she won’t be able to defend her U.S. Open doubles title along with her elder sister, Venus Williams. Venus, who has not played in any tournament since Wimbledon 2010, is expected to go for glory in the singles event at the U.S. Open.
Andy Roddick, while commenting on Serena William’s withdrawal said, “It is going to be a big hit for the U.S. Open championship this season”.
“I haven’t met her since her decision however, I am totally aware of the fact that hard court is one of her favourite surfaces so off course if she is not participating in this year’s U.S. Open competition, there is definitely something seriously wrong with her foot which is quite disastrous for the competition itself”, said Roddick.
Serena has played in the final of sixteen Grand Slam Championships. The last final that she missed was in the Wimbledon Championships, 2006.
She captured her very first major singles title back in 1999 at the United States Open tournament and also captured the trophy from the Flushing Meadows back in 2002 as well as in 2008.
If she was completely fit, Serena Williams would have been the top contender to win at Flushing Meadows which starts from August 30.
“We regret that the top ranked Williams is not playing in this year’s United States Open tournament and wish her a quick recovery”, said Curley on Friday. “She will definitely be missed, however the championship is all about the matches and the contenders on the court”, he added.
Switzerland’s Roger Federer, who has won the United States Open title on five occasions in his career so far, said, “Williams injury is not only a disappointing news for her but it is equally disappointing for the entire tennis fraternity as well as the championship itself. I am sure the Americans are going to miss their top star in their home event”.
