Injured Wallabies star Al Baxter to conclude his career at the end of 2011- Rugby News
Wallabies most experienced player, Al Baxter, has finally decided to say farewell to international rugby after end of forthcoming Rugby World Cup 2011. The injury struck star has taken the decision after being hit by large scale injuries in the current Super
Rugby season. Al Baxter announced his possible exit from rugby tody on June 8, in a press conference.
Al Baxter told the media that he has taken the decision after consulting with Wallabies head coach, Robbie Deans. He further said that it was getting difficult for him to carry on in the sport after the RWC 2011. He further said that, "It was tough in some
ways, but easy in others. I love playing rugby union and to give it away is really difficult, but I'd got to a stage where my body was taking about five days to recover between games, so I don't think I would have lasted another full Super season.”
Al Baxter made his international rugby debut for Australia in 2003 and has participated in 69 games for his country. The veteran player had earlier played in two Rugby World Cups and is hopeful to play the third before he hangs up his boots. The 34-year-old
is the only Australian to participate in 69 tests for his national side.
He has also the honour of representing his Super Rugby team NSW Waratahs in more than 100 games. Recently he is playing the current season of Super Rugby along with the squad.
The Australian Rugby Union has commended his services with the team and said that Al Baxter remained persistent and committed throughout his career. Australian Rugby Union managing director and chief executive, John O'Niell, also applauded his achievements
and said, “His longevity in the most demanding of positions on the Rugby field is testament not only to his ability but his character, persistence and ambition to continually better himself as a prop at the highest levels of our game.”
Al Baxter said that he enjoyed his time with the Wallabies throughout his career and will try to contribute with maximum efforts in the forthcoming RWC 2011.
