Question:

Injured dove in my backyard

There is an injured dove laying in the grass in my backyard. It is still alive. It looks like there is an injury on his head -like he flew into something. He is out in the open. Should I move him to a more sheltered area or leave him alone and see what happens. I am afraid the squirrels or something might get to him. But I also don't want to stress him out.

  1. It'd be best to leave him where he is, though if he's still there tomorrow (and still alive), I suggest you move him.

    Awh, the poor dove. ;_;

  2. Moving him will stress him, which should be avoided.  If you've got the time, just stand guard for a while.

    A bird once smacked into my window and dropped to the ground.  He was still alive, but I was afraid a cat might get him.  So I sat and did some studying on my front porch (near the bird) for about a half hour, and then he flew away.

  3. He has an injury so do not worry about disease.  Wear gloves or pick him up with a towel. Put the bird in box with a lid.  Make a few air holes in the top of box and place the bird in warm quiet place in your house or garage.  If you have a heating pad set it to low and place it under half of the box.  The warmth helps treat shock from being injured.  Then while the bird rests, check your phone book or on line for a wildlife rehabilitation organization or rehabiltator living near you.  They take injured and orphaned birds in and you will not be charged and fee,  If transportation is a problem, they might pick it up. It could have flew into something, escaped an attack by a hawk/cat, be a young bird attacked by another bird, or the worst of all... shot with a pellet or bb by one of your neighbors.   It needs your help to get it safe  or something else will get it.

  4. Just leave him alone and let the dove die in peace

  5. dont let it suffer,

    Twist its head off

  6. cook and eat him.They are delicous

  7. uhhh do you have a gun because i would kill it to put it out of it's misary

  8. An injury like bleeding or an injury like hes shaking it and looks disoriented? Try to keep any pets you may have away, and just try to keep the area quiet. Give him an hour or so and if he hasnt recovered call your local humane society or raptor center (I dont think theyd do much but they do say bring injured birds to them)  If they wont do anything and you feel that you have to take him in or something, put him in a small box in a dark room closest to outdoor temp (unless its like 90 degrees out, then go a bit cooler), and try to keep it quiet. Obviously if you shut the box remember that they need air! :) Dont touch him. Use plastic gloves if you have them to move him, or a cloth or something.  Otherwise, check on him the next morning to see if he's still alive, and try leaving him some water, or birdseed if he's alert.

    You can try taking him to the vet once you know he isnt going to die right away, but that's your choice.

  9. Well if you see mosquitoes flying around him be VERY careful. West Nile Virus is normally caught by mosquitoes drinking the blood from a dead bird.

  10. put on some garden gloves, get a blanket and put the dove in a box , call the vet and get advice then if the vet says cover the box up and take it to the local vet.
