Question:

Injured fish - anything more I can do?

I was moving my black shark into his new big tank and he, as expected, had a major freakout. While I thought he might knock off a scale or two, he managed a huge gash on his head, just behind his eye. There is now a big flap of skin hanging off. He's essentially in a hospital tank as it was a new tank for just him...it has a little of the original tank water but is mostly clean water, with AquaSafe and Cycle put in as it was being set up. I started with dose 1 of Melafix last night and will keep at it. Anything more I can do for my special fish?

  1. Best thing you can do for an injured fish is keep the water as clean as possible. A little melafix willl do no harm, but the most important is clean water. As the tank is new make sure you dont get any ammonia spikes as that will stress the fish and make it more vulnerable to infections.

If the wound does get infected you can treat it with antibiotics, but if the fish is healthy and the water clean then it should heal up naturally.
