Question:

Injuries in hunter-jumper?

I used to ride hunter-jumper. I had to switch stab;es and I am now currently riding saddle-seat. I really want to go back to hunter-jumper but my mom in convinced that there are more injuries jumping than barrel racing and other more competitive equine sports. Is she right? What are some ways I can win her over?

  1. Being involved with horses is inherently risky, however if you are using the proper safety equipment and being properly supervised then the risks are greatly mitigated.  Some injuries result from events out of anyone's control (i.e. spooking) and can happen to any person in any event.  You obviously competed in hunter-jumper before without any catastrophic injury.  The bottom line is that no event is completely safe, but if you being smart about it then you can reduce the risks enormously.

  2. Not really in Hunter Jumpers, except for the people who ride on their horses neck over the jump and then get thrown off. I love to take a break from eventing and go watch the people with expensive horses who can barely ride ;)
