Injury-affected Francisco Liriano and Pittsburgh Pirates’ deal apparently in jeopardy – MLB News
Neither the left-hander Francisco Liriano nor the Pittsburgh Pirates would have anticipated it. However, it – to an increasingly disillusioned fan’s dread, has materialized.
Reports surfaced on Tuesday, January 08, that the deal between Pirates and Liriano is in jeopardy now, if not completely off, after the pitcher suffered an injury on the non-throwing right arm. If true, it will be a setback for the Pirates.
The pitcher had a split-season in 2012 wherein he represented both the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox. The pitcher had an impressive year in 2006 when he held 12-3 record. His overall record is 53-54.
The $12.75 contract was signed in late December, though not formally made official. And – as reports suggested, the unspecified injury plagued the player after few days of the said deal.
Such was the nature of the injury, as reports indicated, that the pitcher could not even travel to his home in Dominican Republic to Pittsburgh to go through the physical in order to make the agreement official.
Although a lot has been said about it, and is being said, when it comes to general manager Neal Huntington, there is apparently no hurry to announce anything at this point in time.
According to Neal Huntington, the Pirates are having dialogue with Francisco’s representatives, ‘but there is nothing to announce.’
That which comes as another important factor here, among other things about the said contract, is the fact that the club did not show any haste either to announce the deal when it was widely reported to have been reached.
Since there was no rush to announce that, the injury report will not probably be officially announced at this point.
"We announce and acknowledge transactions when they are official," Huntington said. "News of any agreement never came from us."
Everything is expected to be clear in the next few weeks, if not days. If true, this may prompt the Pirates to see for a pitcher. For the Pirates, one of the setbacks in 2012 was the underperforming defence. A set of quality pitchers can reverse that this
year provided the Pirates achieve that.
