Injury could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Chong Wei, says BAM president Nadzmi
The President of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh thinks that ankle injury may prove blessing in disguise for Lee Chong Wei as now he will try even harder to make a strong statement in the 2012 London Olympics.
Malaysian maestro hurt his ankle during a match against World Number five Danish shuttler Peter Hoeg Gade in Thomas Cup Finals and now he has been advised a month’s rest.
This really put Malaysia’s hopes for an Olympic medal in danger as the mega event is just about two months away and it will be in full swing from July 27, 2012.
However, the president of national body Datuk Nadzmi believes that even this hurdle can work in their favour as Chong Wei will push himself hard to win race of glory in London Olympics.
He said, “This injury could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I saw the emotion and disappointment on his face. He really wants the Olympic gold and this will drive him even harder in his quest.”
The badminton king is expected to hang up racket after coming edition of Olympics and Nadzmi hoped that he will bid farewell like a champion.
Moreover, he also praised Chong Wei’s determination after meeting him in Wuhan and looked positive that the Malaysian ace will act tough during this troubled period.
He said, “He is a one-of-a-kind athlete. He’s self-motivated and determined and I have full confidence that he will come out of this a much stronger person.”
Later, Nadzmi criticised Doubles experts Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong for their below par performance in crucial group match against Denmark.
He advised them to follow Chong Wei who always gives his best in any condition and alarmed them that these failures will jeopardise their prospects in London Games.
He said, “The coaches have brought Koo and Tan to a high level and it’s now up to them to produce results. If they can be self-motivated and committed like Chong Wei, there is hope for them at the Olympics.”
Nadzmi also showed intentions that if World Number eight duo keeps on making mistakes then the association will think about splitting them in the mega event as well.
Later, he vowed to provide ill-fated Chong Wei the best medical facilities to ensure his presence in coming edition of Olympics.
