Injury drives Milos Raonic out of the US Open – Tennis News
Sad news for the Canadian tennis fans, as their number one player, Milos Raonic, withdrew from the US Open championship for the reason of his hip injury. The 20-year-old Canadian is about to go through a hip surgery in a few days and will not be able to represent his country in the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Rated at number 29 in ATP (association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Raonic was earlier forced to retire from the second round of Wimbledon Championships due to his agonizing hip injury and he hasn’t played a match since then. The Canadian tennis sensation was expected to make his comeback at Winston-Salem Open, just one week before the US Open begins, but all the hopes of tennis fans faded away when Raonic announced his unavailability for the Grand Slam on Monday.
“After extensive deliberation with my doctors + team, I have decided to delay my tournament return until after the US Open at DC vs. Israel,” Raonic told his fans via twitter on Monday. “I am feeling great, and working hard w/ my coach, physio, and fitness coach. I am excited to comeback and will continue to keep u updated.”
Raonic, who likes to play on hard courts, was expected make a comeback on Monday for the last stop on the US Open Series but his layoff was extended by his medical staff. “I saw the doctor last Wednesday, and I am happy to report my hip is fully healed, I’m excited and happy, now it’s time to get into shape,” he said two days back but eventually confirmed his withdrawal from the mega event.
Raonic got his first hip surgery on 5th of July and was working hard to recover quickly. He is now a part of the long list of top class tennis players, which also include the defending champion, Kim Clijsters of Belgium, who are missing out the Last Grand Slam tournament of the current year.
Huge expectations were associated with Raonic for the US Open tour and it was hoped that the young Canadian will exhibit his magnificent tennis skill on his favourite hard surface to make his place among the top ranked players. Raonic qualified for his first ever US Open tournament last year but was ejected in his very first match against Australia’s number three, Carsten Ball, in the opening round. Raonic has improved his world ranking from number 152 to number 37 in just one month in 2011 and a lot more is expected from the rising star of Canada.
