Injury ends Spencer Levin's season on PGA Tour
Spencer Levin’s tour has been cut short due to a thumb injury that occurred at a practice session. The nature of the injury is funny itself, considering the fact that it happened because of the belly putter.
Belly putters have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons since the time they were introduced. However, nobody knew they could cause some serious injuries.
Levin suffered the blow on his thumb when he was handing over the putter to his caddie at a practice session. The thumb got tweaked while he was handing over the putter.
It is really strange how it happened, but the fact is that Levin underwent a surgery on his thumb only few days ago.
Unlike the normal putting clubs, belly putters are longer in length and they are much heavier in weight as well. What happened really was that his thumb could not sustain the weight of the putter and as a result it, got tweaked hurting his bone.
The swelling did not die down and as a result, a surgery was needed to repair the damage. All is okay now for Spencer and most importantly, the surgery was successful.
Doctors have said that it will take time to heal this injury and Levin should not take to the field until December. Initially, Levin and his team thought that by resting the thumb the injury would heal itself but it was not to be so.
"We got three opinions," said Don Levin, Spencer's father. "One guy said more rest, two guys said surgery".
This means that Levin would miss the next couple of tournaments, including the Frys.com Open at San Martin. The Frys.com Open is one of the favourite tournaments of Spencer. He is certainly disappointed to miss it but safety comes first.
"It's a bummer," said Don, his groggy son at his side shortly after surgery. "It sets him back, but there's nothing else he could do".
Missing these few tournaments should not matter much to 28-year-old, as he has already earned his tour card for the 2013 season.
Levin has so far earned $1,283,616 in 26 tournaments and is sitting comfortably at the 62nd position in the money tour list.
