Injury forces Chan Peng Soon to sit out of Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold 2011 – Badminton News
Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles player, Chan Peng Soon, will be unable to participate in the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold 2011, due to a back injury which has got worst in the past few days.
Pang Soon was supposed to play with Goh Liu Ying in the Mixed Doubles category, whereas, Tan Wee Kiong was his partner in the category of Men’s Doubles. His injury also disturbed his smooth sailing towards the World Badminton Championships, which will take
place in England, this August.
The Thailand Open was an important event for the 23-year-old Peng Soon, as it was supposed to be his last major event before the World Championships.
Peng soon said, “This is the first time that I have to skip a tournament with Liu Ying because of an injury. The back problem was quite bad during the Sudirman Cup.”
The recent performance of the Malaysian pair in the Sudirman Cup 2011 was not good, as the duo lost both of their matches in the event.
While talking about his injury, Peng Soon said, “At one point, I could not even bend forward or backward. I will need about two weeks to recover from this. I have been carrying this pain for a while this year but it began to affect my game.”
He further added that the pair will appear in the World Championships as they have not been selected to participate in the Singapore Open Super Series and also in the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series. The gap gives the pair enough time to prepare well
for the upcoming event of the World Championships.
Peng Soon is confident to reach at the semi-final stage of the mega event this time. He added, “We hope to reach at least the semi-finals this time. We know it will not be easy but at least we have a target and we will work towards it.”
In the previous two editions of the World Championships, Goh Liu and Peng Soon were unlucky as they lost their matches in the Men’s Doubles first rounds. However, they are confident to make a strong comeback and produce better performances in this edition
of the world meet.
