Injury halts Marleen Van Iersel progress
at World Championship – Beach Volleyball
On Friday, June 10, Dutch Beach Volleyball star, Marleen Van Iersel, withdrew from the Beijing Grand Slam on account of a back injury. The chances are that she won’t be able to join the SWATCH FIVB World Championship in Rome next week. The World Championship
is scheduled to run from June 13-19 and the news has greatly deflated Dutch fans.
Van Iersel was teamed up with Sanne Keizer and together they worked out a great record in the running season. The Dutch team settled for gold at the Shanghai Open Women’s Beach Volleyball Competition, were they performed amazingly well and proved the steel
of their forearms. It was not their first gold-medal victory together as a team and the duo didn’t just stop there. They remained on the winning course and stunned everyone in the next tournament in Myslowice, Czech Republic.
The Myslowice Open was women’s exclusive tournament were Marleen showed her attacking power and enjoyed the spotlight for her astounding tactics. The duo kept on winning and finished the Myslowice Open in the top slot. They came across some of the very best
players but nothing could stop them from claiming the gold.
The Dutch Volleyball family was really pleased with the tremendous progress of Marleen and Kizer. The duo was expected to give out another incredible performance at the Beijing Grand Slam. Nonetheless, the tournament in China brought a different fate for
them. Marleen was under stress and couldn’t perform well as they lost three matches of the round-robin in a row and pulled out of competition on Thursday, June 9.
Marleen was actually down with the pain in her back as she started the first training session in Beijing. She was under the assumption that it might be because of the travelling and continued with practice. She participated in the first two matches, which
increased the pain. On Thursday, she was consulted by on-site FIVB physician, Professor Mamadou Ndoye, who said that she should not play the remaining matches.
Mamadou stated, “It’s not very serious, but she can’t make some movements, I think it will take about 10 days for her to recover. She will need to get a medical certificate to prove she is fit to play again if she recovers sooner than expected.” Marleen
has left the tournament is in recovery at the moment. Hopefully she can come back sooner rather than later.
