Injury-stricken Andrea Petkovic pulls out of her Wimbledon campaign – Tennis News
Heartbreaking news for the tennis fans, as the former German number one, Andrea Petkovic, has announced her withdrawal from the Wimbledon Championships. The German diva has still not fully recovered from her right ankle injury
and has no option but to pull out of her third successive Grand Slam campaign.
Currently holding the 18th spot in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Petkovic has already missed out the bulk of this year’s season due to lower back injury. She only took part in the season-opening
tournaments in Brisbane and Sydney but was sidelined from the professional circuit of her itching lower back. The German made her comeback in the FED Cup ties against Australia and lost her singles rubber against Samantha Stosur.
Her long-awaited return to the WTA Tour was seen in Stuttgart, Germany but she twisted her right ankle badly in the second round match against the then world number one, Victoria Azarenka. Petkovic dropped the French Open due to
that injury and was expected to return for the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Wimbledon Championships.
The German fans heard the disheartening news of her withdrawal from the third consecutive Grand Slam tournament this week. "Unfortunately I will not be able to return in time for Wimbledon this year. While this is another setback
in my return, I will continue to work hard on getting back on court as soon as possible," Petkovic said in a statement this week.
Petkovic had a tremendous circuit last year and finished at number 10 in the WTA World Rankings. She made it to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the US Opens in 2011 to become the number one German tennis
player. Her nonappearance in this year’s WTA Tour has pushed her to the number 18th spot and she might slip further down if she doesn’t make her comeback to the professional circuit. She has a winning record of 4-4, something she desires desperately
to improve by the end of this season. Petkovic’s absence from the star-studded field of Wimbledon will certainly be missed by a huge number of fans, who are hoping to see their favourite tennis star in action in Olympic Games in a couple of months.
