Injury updates from training camps
It is only the third day of full-team practices and already the injury bug has hit a few training camps across the NFL. Six weeks remain before season opener and players are already hurting.
Broncos thin at the running back position
The Broncos got off on the wrong foot at training camp, losing their two main offensive weapons in Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter. Both players went down within the first hour of camp following a costly seven-on-seven drill that left the Broncos thin at the running back position.
Moreno, 23, pulled his right hamstring and is expected to miss two weeks, while Buckhalter, 31, experienced a tingling sensation in his extremities. The veteran was admitted to a local hospital as a precaution and later released when doctors examined him and found nothing unusual. Buckhalter will be a day-to-day case and he should be back on the field shortly.
This is definitely not the start that head coach Josh McDaniels envisioned. “Certainly, you don't want to see two of your guys that you really count on at the same position come off the field on the first day of training camp," McDaniels said.
With both injuries considered minor, the Broncos can let a sigh of relief for the moment. The only concern moving forward is that Moreno has not shown to be a resilient back in the NFL just yet and he did take a pounding last year and many pundits said he looked “worn down” as the season reached its conclusion. He is the starter, so if he can’t stay healthy and carry the load in the season’s finale games, this could be problematic for Denver considering the fact they are a running team and a successful ground game is necessary in the months of December.
The Broncos have always been known for their strong running game. Many running backs have had success in Denver’s system and they have made a name for themselves. Terrell Davis, Clinton Portis, Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell, just to name a few, have all excelled. Moreno and Buckhalter will have their chance, if they can stay healthy.
Eagles’ DeSean Jackson
Wide receiver DeSean Jackson didn't practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday due to a lower back strain. Jackson injured himself during Saturday’s practice by stumbling on the ground after making a catch. Although he was unable to walk off the field under his own power, the Eagles have listed as day-to-day, so he should be back on the field within a few days at the most.
Jackson is a playmaker and the Eagles' most dangerous offensive weapon. The city of brotherly love is banking on him to take them to the promised land and bring a Super Bowl to Philadelphia. He is undersized for a player in the NFL weighing only 175lb, but he has shown too much upside with his breakaway speed and good hands not to be a starter in this league.
He suffered a concussion last season and now has a lower back injury. He can only help his team if he’s on the field scoring touchdowns. His ability to take care of his body will be the key to a long and prosperous career in the pros.
Romo’s throwing arm is already sore
Is it rust? Has it been that long since the last time Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has thrown a ball? In any event, Romo has sore right arm. This is an issue because Romo is feeling discomfort in his throwing arm and it is affecting the timing with his receivers. After a few passes the quarterback grimaced on Sunday, but didn’t seem too concerned with the pain. "It happens every year. ... It's just part of the process," Romo said. The prescription for the one they call Superman in Dallas is ice and rest.
