Injury woes end Caroline Wozniacki title quest; Flavia Pennetta continues on – Swedish Open 2011
World number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark withdrew from her second round Swedish Open clash against local favourite Sofia Arvidsson after suffering a shoulder injury on Wednesday.
Top-seeded Wozniacki was 6-2, 0-1 in her second round match against the Swede when the problem in her right shoulder forced her to quit her $220,000 Swedish Open campaign after just 42 minutes of play.
Arvidsson is exactly the wrong type of player to confront if ailing. She made Wozniacki work hard for every point and did not flinch. The first game of the second set was a perfect example. The end result was that Arvidsson broke
Wozniacki's serve and looked very sharp, irrespective of Wozniacki's condition, before she called it quits.
Nevertheless, Wozniacki did show tremendous class and honour for the game by just finishing the opener, as she was in no shape to compete anywhere near her best.
Despite losing her second round clash against the Swede, Wozniacki, still leads their head-to-head encounters 4-1, as a healthy and relaxed Wozniacki is a totally different proposition.
The win sends the local favourite into the quarterfinals of the tournament where she will meet Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain.
Although Wozniacki exits the event the second-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy continues on as she advanced into the quarterfinals with 6-2, 6-3 win over the German Angelique Kerber.
Pennetta kicked off great but became nervous when she was about to serve it out at 5-2, and Kerber took full advantage. But in the next game, Pennetta converted on a second match point as her opponent’s forehand sailed way wide.
Kerber gave her fans a glimmer of hope, breaking Pennetta in the opening stages of the second set but the fun did not last long, as the second-seeded Italian broke back and then hit a conclusive shot of the match, lashing a forehand
winner down the line. When Pennetta grabbed a 5-3 lead, it was all-over for the German, as the second-seeded Pennetta applied a knockout punch, closing out the match with a 6-2, 6-3 score line.
Emerging victorious, the Italian No.2 now marches on into the quarterfinal round of the tournament where she will meet seventh-seeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of Czech Republic.
