  1. Take them to the bank, see if you can get them changed - explain what happened - they might change them for you.

  2. You could wash it, but isn't money laundering illegal?

  3. Haha Ed money laundering. That is the best answer.

    It doesn't matter.

Just deposit it in the bank. They will exchange  it with good money anyway. You are not going to get in trouble for defacing the money.

  4. WD40

  5. The Treasury has an obligation to pay out on currency that has been damaged, unless it is so badly damaged that it is not possible to determine the value.  Money that has been damaged by things like fire, flood, burying etc. gets studied by the Treasury's experts, if necessary, to figure out the values, and is replaced with new notes.  Banks regularly send money back to be destroyed and replaced, once it is very old or worn.

    The basic rule is this:

    - If you can still tell what the value of the note is, the bank should be able to replace it for you.

    - If the note is so damaged that it's difficult to tell the value (or to be sure it's even a legal note!), then you will likely have to send it to the treasury to have it replaced.

Just take it to your bank and they will be able to tell you if it's too damaged for them to accept.

As for 'laundering' your money (Nice one, Ed), it's not as ridiculous as it might seem.  Most bank notes are now made out of something that's actually closer to cloth than paper, so leaving one in your pocket in the wash won't do nearly as much damage as it would have done to older-style notes!

I know that this info applies to US, UK and Canadian currency, and I suspect that it applies in most other countries, too.

  6. It doesn't matter as long as both numbers are still readable. Ask a bank to change them for new notes.
