  1. Its called Iquitos not Inquitas. both are about the same anyone is good.

  2. For either destination it is important where you go.  The best rainforest in terms of biodiversity is in the national parks and reserves: Pacaya-Samiria and Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo out of Iquitos or Manu, Tambopata or Candamo out of Puerto Maldonado.  If you have a particular interest in species of animals, Pacaya Samiria is best in the entire Amazon for caiman crocs, Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo is best anywhere in the world for monkeys, Manu is great for giant otters and tapirs, Tambopata is best for parrots.

Puerto Maldonado has the disadvantage of requiring that people have vaccinations for yellow fever before entering.  Yellow fever is not a problem in Loreto-Iquitos.  Malaria is also more prevalent in the regions outside of Puerto Maldonado.  From Iquitos you do not need malaria prophyllaxis unless you are taking the Nauta Road to the Pacaya Samiria.

  3. First of all is Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado. I've been to both of them and here are my comments. Iquitos is in the department of Loreto, on the upper north eastern corner of Peru. The amazon jungle there is quite nice but in the past 10 or 15 years it has become very industrialized and some places look more like a dirty city than an ecological jungle.

Puerto Maldonado (capital of the province of Madre de Dios, near Cuzco in the south east part of Peru) is a very nice place. In there you can find two ecological reserves: Tambopata and Manu. Both of them are carefully taken care of by many organizations and in matters of flaora and fauna it is richer than Iquitos. There you find a lot of ecological resorts and hotels such as Inka Terra which is simply breathtaking in the middle of the jungle, but respecting the ecology.

So, in a word, choose Puerto Maldonado.

  4. Puerto Maldonado, but I would rather go to Saposoa any day of the week.
