  1. Is it a potato bug?

    Edit:

I was curious as to what this was and I remember finding potato bugs at the bottom of my family pool as a kid.

But here was a funny site you may enjoy:

  2. I agree with million$.  It's a dragonfly nymph.  They can be rather big.  And yeah, they're beneficial.  They eat lots of bugs and they don't hurt people.  Although the nymphs are quite ugly, full grown dragonflies are often quite beautiful.  If you find one in a swimming pool, maybe you can rescue it if you can get it to a nearby pond.  I don't think it could live very long in a chlorinated pool.

  3. Learn to ID it with the help of these sites and even if you do not find what you are looking for you will be able to ID any bug in the future -

  4. Looks Creepy

    Could be a beetle

  5. looks like maybe a dragon-fly nymph

they live on the bottom of shallow ponds and sometimes go up into the water plants,  when they mature to their adult life-stage, they  metamorphose into dragonflys,   (if you don't believe that's possible, just think of the life stages of mosquitoes, from waterborne larvae, to air-flying mosquitoes).  Take a look at this picture of the dragonfly nymph in the guy's hand.

Don't destroy it, these insects are actually very good, they don't harm people at all, plus they fly around catching and eating mosquitoes and flys, plus as adults, they can be quite colourful and beautiful, and very artistic and agile at flying, very interesting to see.
