  1. Ahhh, the sound of crickets in a  hot Greek summer night!!!

Indeed is crickets,AKA Tzitzikia (plural) or Gryloi.

Totally harmless, makes the summer in Greece special and unforgettable.

There is a popular expression in Greece in order to show how hot it is: "Skaei o tzitzikas",(the cricket blows off) meaning is way too hot.

    Enjoy your stay there :)

  2. Itis a cicada they can be very loud here is a good link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada

  3. Yes, jijiki means cricket. They're very common in summer and harmless, of course.

Have a nice time in Athens!

  4. I love this insect!  It's a cricket.    Summer without jijikia & karpouzi  in Greece is not a summer!

I wish you to  enjoy your stay!

  5. We have them too in the U.S. as well, usually in the summer when its really hot. Try the name Gigikas, the same as jijiki just another form of saying it. I think it's like the Adult cicadas there called.
