Inseparable quartet share lead in the first round of OKI Open de España Senior on European Seniors Tour
Old compatriots and friends, often called as the “inseparable quartet”, Bob Cameron, Bill Longmuir, David Merriman and José Rivero, are amazingly tied for the lead in the opening round of OKI Open de España Senior by Cleveland and Srixon on the European
Senior Tour.
Each of the four players struck rounds of stunning five-under, 66 to share the lead at the scenic El Valle Golf Resort in Southern Spain. Trailing the leaders by one shot, are the Englishmen John Harrison and three-time Order of Merit winner Carl Mason,
both of whom posted rounds of four-under, 67.
But apart of the dazzling display of the seniors in the opening round, Longmuir’s round stunned the field as the player has just undertaken a swing overhaul with his coach and long associate Clive Tucker.
“I let it go a bit after nine holes and I missed a couple of short putts on 12 and 13 for bogey from around five feet which was a bit disappointing, but I bounced back with three birdies to finish,” said Longmuir while speaking to reporters.
Cameron, who has been indecisive about the selection of driver, seemingly made the right choice this morning with his bogey-free first round.
“I obviously picked the right driver,” laughed Cameron. “No bogeys today which is always satisfying and even though I missed a six foot putt on the 18th for a 65 I am happy with the score.”
Merriman also made a welcoming revelation about his putter and posted a solid round to be in contention for the lead.
"I played nicely holed a couple of very nice putts that make the difference in your score," said Merriman.
Rivero, although has an unfair advantage of playing on home turf, slid back with a bogey on the opening hole but quickly recovered to finish the round on top. Most of the players argued about the course being trickier this summer than anticipated, but agreed
that the conditions are perfect.
Leading contingent of the Seniors Tour is pitched for the €250,000 event with a winner’s cheque of £37,500. Former Ryder Cup captain, Barry Lane is the defending champion.
