Inside half,outside half?

Much was made of these positions by the BBC commentary team.

Referring to Ireland in the game against France.

Can someone briefly explain to me the differences and why an outside half would struggle to play in the other position?

  1. Rugby Union.

Inside half = scrum half (no9); outside half = fly half.(no10)

The scrum half puts into the scrum, gets balls out of rucks etc then gives the ball (usually) to the fly-half .They are used to their own roles but most would be able to adapt to another position if needed.

Outside these two come the inside centre(no12) and the outside centre.(no13)

The man who mentioned 5/8 is talking about league..a different game to Union.

  2. Their is no difference between this 2 positions. A fly half can move to second 5/8 and vice versa. The position of 2nd 5/8 usually has to be a kicker in scenario where a fly half cannot clear the ball he passes it to the 2nd. If you usually just specify in 2nd 5/8 it would be hard to switch to fly half usually because you are bigger and heavier mainly because you try to bust tackles. Why it is easier for a fly half to switch to 2nd 5/8 is because of his kicking abilities.

  3. The major difference between the two positions is the players' body composition. Inside centres tend to be bigger - and a bit quicker - than fly-halves

The BBC has a good guide to positions that I ripped this from
