What does it mean by inside joke? People say it but I don't know what it means.

It's usually a personal joke hat usually you and someone else (or a small group of people) understand.

It just means that it is a joke between two or more other people. They may be there or not, but a word brought up in conversation might relate to a past experience that was funny to those people.

If they say inside joke, they are simply saying that the mirth of the subject is only understood by a certain group of people.

It may be as small as anyone who was present when the incident that becomes an in joke occurred, or it may be something that only someone who is educated in one area would understand, or people who have read a certain book or seen a certain movie.

An inside joke is just a joke that makes sense between two people or a small intimate group of people.

For example...

My boyfriend and I noticed that there was this little door under the stairwell in our apartment complex one day. It was probably for maintenance storage or something, but because we're weird we invented this whole story about a strange little man named Melvin that lives in there and tirelessly types novels.

Now, if we were with a group of our friends and there was a small opening somewhere of sorts, and we looked at each other and said, "Look, Melvin's cousin!" No one else in the group would have any idea what we meant except for us of course.

That is an inside joke. Overly explained...:)
