  2. They're very spacious, much more comfortable to sleep in than airplanes.  You can recline almost all the way back, even in coach class.  You can also stand up, walk to the observation car or the dining car, stretch your legs, talk to other travelers, and generally enjoy yourself.  They are very comfortable. The bathrooms are clean, too- lots cleaner than a plane or a bus, and actually even cleaner than many gas stations or fast food restaurants.

  3. They are a lot like greyhound coaches.

  4. yes they are big

My wife and I travel by Amtrak on the #11 and #14 Coast Starlight.

Let me give you a piece of advice.  Get the sleeper when you travel.  Amtrak's coaches are nice for a short trip, but anything longer than about 8 hours, you are going to want the sleeper.

The roomette is the smallest room that converts to a sleeper berth at night, or anytime for that matter.

It has a power outlet in the room so you can plug in your laptop or portable DVD Player and watch your own movies, (with headphones).  Plus you get to see all of the pretty scenery going by your window, (when you are not in town).

The others are correct in stating that you can get up and walk around the train, go to the lounge car, or the observation car and enjoy the views.

The nice part of traveling on Amtrak, when you purchase the sleeper, the meals are included.

We had a trip three years ago where we travel coach.  Yeah, uh, except for the screaming children, the ride was really nice.

As for the staff, I have no complaints.  Its more like a rolling hotel than anything else.  As for the food, its really good too.

You can view the rooms on:

Good Luck and enjoy your trip.

Oh yes, just a word about traveling the Coast Starlight Route.  There is currently a service disruption north of Sacramento due to Union Pacific Track Repair north of Chemult, Oregon.  the reason for the disruption is because there are no locomotive servicing facilities north of Sacramento until Eugene.  Eugene is the first service stop from Sacramento.

Unfortunately, Eugene is north of Chemult.

So busses are running from Sacramento to Portland.

    Good Luck!
