Install Ceiling fan on old light box?

I have been helping my brother install a Ceiling fan. I know some electrical wiring, and its his house.

He did have a ceiling fan before but it didn't have a light on it and I guess it wobbled a lot. When we were hanging the fan, it start to slip all over the place, and wobble back and forth before I could even lock the fan into place. This lead us to believe that the Light box isn't hooked up that great (the house is almost 30 years old).

I'm guessing its one of those light boxes that are tied to some metal bar, it doesn't feel like it is mounted in any wood.

What can be done to help secure the box better?

  1. Go to the electrical supply store and ask for a "SPACE BRACE".

A light box won't support a fan (and is actually a code violation).

You need something that can take the weight and motion.

The SPACE BRACE is made so well you can do pullups on it AND you can install it thru the existing hole, no need to cut anything.

Of course, if you have access to the space above, you can build in a support with 2x4s and then use wood screws from the fan hanger right thru to the 2x4.

  2. These are good answers.  Just one more point, If the fan still wobbles after turned on then it is out of balance.  You can balance by adding a 1/4"washers to the out side top of each blade until you figure out which blade needs the weight. Masking tape temporary until you fine the right blade and do you need two or more washers to solve the problem.  Then glue the washer with epoxy on the appropriate blade.  It shouldn't take more than one or two washers to solve the weight problem.

  3. According to the national electric code, the fan has to be supported independently of the box or use a paddle fan rated box, N.E.C. article 370-27(c) states Outlet boxes shall not be used as the sole support for ceiling suspended paddle fans.

(Exception: Boxes listed for the application shall be permitted as the sole means of support) it cant be supported by  just 8/32 screws. And whatever you do don't hire a thumbs down scab electrician. In some states scabs are not even required to have an education. Union boys have an associates degree in electricity by going through a rigorous 5 year apprenticeship program, Most rats don't get any formal education I know this will bring the thumbs down but its true so bring it scabs. I have been in the trade for 25 years 10 of which I have been a contractor so I do have the Qualifications. Michigan Master Electrician.

  4. Kill the breker and pull the old box. You need to add backing from joist to joist and then install the new box. Then you will be able to install the fan the correct way.
