I need to install a metal shelf about 3 feet in length onto my wall. There are 4 holes on the sides where im supposed to use a s***w/nail type of thing.I just wanted to know, what will hold up the nails and prevent the shelf from falling? Drywall anchors the way to go? What exactly are they and will they be affective? I need to install it in less then 2 days.

Thank You!!

  1. Find a nail about 2inches long and as small a diamenter as possible. Now tap on the wall with your knuckle and you will hear a sound. Continue knocking across the three foot area where you intend to hang the shelf. The sound will change at least twice across this space from a hollow to a solid sound. You do this a couple of times and the stud behind the wall will be at the solid sound. Now take the small nail you found and lightly hammer it into the wall. If it sinks all the way in you missed the stud. Pull it out and hammer it in again a 1/2 inch over and continue this untill you can't pull it out easy. You have found the stud. This spot then is your solid connection for your shelf. Mark this spot but do not attach the shelf yet. Hold the shelf up on the wall with one of the holes on a side over the spot where you found the stud and with a pencil mark the other hole on the opposite side. This will most likely be over a hollow cavity in the wall. It is here that you install a wall anchor.and on the soild side a s***w or a good nail.

  2. Depending on the type of your wall.

If its Dry wall, than yeah dry wall anchors with screws would work, just dont put over 60kg of weight on it, after all dry wall is not metal!!

If its a solid wall, concrete wall, get a hammer drill, make a small hole, smaller than you screws you want to use, s***w them in tight.
