Question:

Install ubuntu on a computer that has no os?

i want to get a computer eventually.

but i also want to switch over to linux(ubuntu to be precise)

if i properly put ubuntu on a cd,will i be able to put it on the new computer even though it will have no os on it at the time.

(also,i was thinking ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron,but,what do you suggest?)

  1. Yes, you don't need to have an OS installed in order to install a new one - just make sure that 1) your computer will boot to CD, and 2) that you select the option to check the disk for errors before running/installing Ubuntu - and as TalentedChimp said, you can boot into Ubuntu so you can see how it works before you actually install it, and you can initiate installation simply by double-clicking the "Install" icon from the desktop.

    Hardy's been great for me thus far - I'd highly recommend it to anyone, even an elementary-level user.


  2. Burn Ubuntu to a CD, put the CD in the CD drive and start the PC.  It will boot live (i.e. run from the CD).  There will be an install link on the desktop.

    Ubuntu is a good, well supported OS.
