I am getting a laptop which will have either vista or xp home as its operating system.

.

What I want to do is get a copy of xp pro and use this instead of the existing os.

.

Is this simply a matter of inserting the pro cd and letting it run, or do I have to remove the existing os first.

.

I would like to do this as simply as possible, and use xp pro as my os.

.

Any ideas please..

  1. Huh??!!!....

  2. The most simple way would to access your bios (usually by pressing either the delete button or F11). And then selecting your CD-ROM drive as the first boot priority. Make sure you save your settings you just made and then have the XP PRO disk in the drive. The disk will boot up and then you simply follow the prompts. Make sure you format your hard-drive in NTFS and make your Primary partition the largest it can be. As long as you have the CD key to your disk you should be fine. Just follow the prompts and if you get stuck come back here!

I hope this was of some help.

  3. u can have two operating system provided they are in different drives

  4. well during the xp setup you are asked if you wish to repartition your hdd...

so through this i would delete all partitions, create a new partition for xp, format it ntfs (quick) and go from there.

  5. Before you install new program i would buy proper formating softwear. I have heard that a lot of people have messed up thier laptops whilst trying this. Just bbuy the softwear disc to format the computer fiirst thewn the rest is sttraight forward, i believe.

  6. yeah just put the OS disk in, reboot, then the CD should boot-up.

it will take you through steps for preparing the hard drive.

make sure you choose "clean install" or something but dont choose repair.

format the drive, this wipes off the old OS.

then it starts to install your new OS.

    simple really. ;-)

  7. If it's Vista that's installed you'll be able to downgrade it to XP Pro, otherwise it's just a matter of inserting the XP Pro CD when you boot your PC. Which can be installed alongside the existing OS or you can simply delete it when prompted on the CD.

  8. yes all you will have to do is boot to the xp disc and format the drive to erase all current files then finish the installation as planed. However make sure you can get the drivers for the hardware as well otherwise your computer may not work right and in that case I would have the original recovery discs ready otherwise your out of luck on a computer until you can get them. You can download UNKNOWN DEVICES its a free program and after you finish your xp pro install run it. This will scan your computer and tell you what drivers you will need then all you have to do is google them download them and install.

  9. You need to remove the existing operating system before installing Windows XP Pro. also, back up all of your programs, drivers, docs, emails etc, or these will be lost.

I have included a good website to help you installing the OS on your laptop. Hope it helps

  10. all you have to do is put the disk in the disk tray boot up into the cd and just do what the cd says. its very easy to
