Question:

Installing RAM question...?

I bought a stick of RAM from Dell (computer manufacturer) specifically for my desktop computer. I opened up my computer and inserted the stick, but the OS did not recognize it. Is there anything I have to update for the OS to recognize the RAM? I am running Windows Vista Ultimate. I have tried putting the 1gb (recently bought) in slot 1 and the 512mb from before in slot 2, and vice versa. The computer doesn't even start when the 1gb is in slot 1, as if the computer doesn't recognize that type. I bought the RAM from the company I bought the computer, and I bought it specifically for this model, so I would assume that they are compatible.

  1. If you have 2 slots for RAM (DIMS), they must have the same size and type of RAM in them. If you are only using 1 slot, then this is not an issue. Also, check to make sure that the speed of the RAM is compatible with the computer and matches the RAM in the other DIM. You can only use the new 1G module that you bought, install it in one of the DIMS and remove the 512K module, then reboot. If you want to add more than 1G, you will need to buy an additional 1G module, because they need to match.

  2. i dunno wat to say yo

go out and wreck some stuff

    aint workin

    grrr

  3. When you turn on the computer, does it have a beeping sound? if so, you need to make sure the ram stick is pressed in fully all the way.

  4. Phone Dell support and they will walk you through it.
