  1. Not you getting shocked, but the computer.. you need to ground yourself before you handle the ram, and install it in your computer.

  2. It's to protect delicate electrical equipment not to protect you. Just touch the metal chassis of the pc to discharge any static buildup you might have when you open it, and try to do it somewhere with hard floors and not carpet.

I've personally never seen anything damaged by static electricity. It does happen though so it's good to be aware of it.

  3. If you don't ground yourself then you can destory the motherboard in the computer and various other computer components obviously rendering them useless. Grounding yourself is easy either attach an anti-static wristband to the inside side of the computer (not on any components) and of course place it over your wrist, then insert your ram. Or ground yourself by taking both of your hands and running them over the power supply (it looks like a rectangular box). That's it simple! :)

  4. It is highly recommended you wear an antistatic wristband when installing the ram, not because there's a chance you'll get shocked, but because there's a chance that you'll shock your ram or motherboard, which can be damaged by static electricity much less powerful that what a human can feel.
