Question:

Installing a Kitchen Countertop?

I am replacing my kitchen countertop with a inexpensive laminate countertop. Now I am not handy, but I am not dumb. The section is only 7-8 feet. I am going to have the hardware store cut it to its proper length, but I worried about the sink hole. Can they cut it? I have seen how to do it, but I am worried about messing up!!! Should I have Home Depot/Lowes install it. If so, how much would it cost for someone else to install? Recommendations???

  1. you need to rest the sink in the location where the faucet is and draw a line for the sink, you need a jigsaw and cut the hole .

If you purchase the sink as well ,perhaps someone might cut it for you but you will need the exact measurements on where the sink needs to be positioned , I would call a friend or relative to help out if I were you ,certain things are best done on the spot to be certain, if they cut it they might or you might make a mistake and that will be an expensive waste ,but that's my opinion!

  2. It's very easy to cut the sink hole in the countertop.  If you bought a new sink, they probably gave you a template for the thing, that would be the easiest, probably.  But, if you don't have one..  flip the sink over onto the countertop upside down and figure out exactly where you want it.  Wait until you have your backsplash and driprail installed so that you have room to clean behind the sink.  Trace around the edge of the sink with a marker or pencil that will clean off. Take the sink off the counter and measure the lip on the outside of the sink.  The width of the lip will have to be accounted for with the outline you have traced.  If it's 2 inches, e.g., then just draw another line 2 inches inside of the first mark.  This time you can use whatever you want to mark it with, since this is going to be cut out.  There are lots of ways to cut out the hole - router, jigsaw, rotozip, maybe more.  If you use the jigsaw, drill a hole inside the final line so that you can start the saw.  Have at it, make sure you wear your goggles and earplugs.  Seriously, make sure you wear the goggles because it will produce a lot of fine dust that will fly up into your eyes.
