Installing a wall mounted light fixture?

Trying to install a wall mounted light fixture. I know it's black to black and white to white, and the ground. What I don't know is that there is a red wire coming from the box. I don't know if that attaches to the blacks or whites?

If the red is not attached at all the light won't turn off. I tried to attach it to the whites, the light would not turn on at all. If I attached it to the blacks it would not turn off.

This light is in a bathroom. Connected to a 3 switch plate. One switch for pots, one for fan, the other for the vanity light I'm trying to install.

  1. Assuming the box you are talking about is the wall.  The black sounds like the continous power.  The red is the switched power and if you connected the red to the white it should have trip the breaker.

    Red to black on lamp

    White to white on lamp.

Blacks in wall box stay together.
