Question:

Installing and preserving cedar trellis tips?

I bought a cedar trellis, kind of like this:

I want to embed it in the garden so plants can climb it.

(and not nail it to the fence)

Any tips on how to install them? Do you just dig down about 10 inches and pack dirt in tight around it, or will that just fall over after several months of gentle swaying in the wind?

Second, I can't find a decent article anywhere about what kind of preservative to use on cedar which is in direct contact (or under) soil. Anybody have a decent link?

  1. Cedar is more resistant to water than most other kinds of wood.  That's why the trellis is made of cedar.

I use a linseed based protectant on my deck and fence.  It won't help on anything that has positive water pressure on it, i.e. buried under ground.
