  1. Stewart is correct for UK, the only thing to be aware is that the orange carries the ringer voltage so if the extension has a big yellow capasitor on the back dont connect the orange.


  2. For a UK domestic telephone installation, you only need to connect three of the wires (and this includes the internet connection).

    The connectors inside the telephone boxes are numbered, and you connect the wires as follows:

    No. 2   Blue with white rings

    No. 3   Orange with white rings

    No. 5   White with blue rings

  3. usually it is the green and the red.

  4. If it's the older standard wiring in the US, it would be red & green for line 1, yellow and black for line 2 (if you have a 2nd line).  Newer cable (CAT5) is blue/orange/green/brown.  In that case color code says that the Blue and white pair is 1st.  You only need 2 wires  to make a standard telephone work.  By standard I mean a non phone system phone.  

    All in all............It really doesn't matter which wires you use as long as you match up color for color on each end.
