Installing xp. I am trying to install windows on a gateway 2000. But I keep getting a message

I am trying to install windows on a gateway 2000. But I keep getting a message that says file system is protected by ntfs format and to delete all files which I have done but I still get the protection mesage. I have tried to reboot with OS disk in then it tells me no OS found. Any help with this problem would be great. I waant to say thanks ahead of time for you taking the time to help.
