Instead of Carbon Dioxide, what can i use as an alternative to make a plant grow???

This is for my Investigatory Project, I thought that maybe instead of CarbonDioxide, i'll use something else to make my plat grow...

An interesting thought.

Here are some things you might think about.

How are you going to keep carbon dioxide away from the plants?  Air has plenty of carbon dioxide to make a plant grow.

This question is sort of like asking what you could breathe instead of oxygen.  Carbon dioxide is not so much a fertilizer as the intake part of a plants respiration.  It is sort of what plants breathe.

Finally, an actual answer to your question.  It has to have carbon in it (thats what plants are mostly made of, besides water, and they only get it by breathing CO2 from the air.

How about carbon monoxide?  Maybe some plants could respirate that.  Be careful.  Breathing too much carbon monoxide kills people.

Photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide, kinda like how respiration requires oxygen.  And because you cannot substitute O2 with anything else for our breathing, your plant will only survive with CO2.  Also, since CO2 is relatively abundant in the atmosphere you would need a special apparatus to have the plant in an CO2 deficient environment.

I'm afraid this is not possible; carbon dioxide is the raw source of carbon for autotrophs and as such plants cannot build carbohydrates without the intake of carbon dioxide.

@ enginerd: Carbon monoxide would not work. The enzyme Rubisco (ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase), which catalyzes the step in photosynthesis involving molecular CO2, is, like all other enzymes, highly selective for only the reaction it is designed to catalyze. Similarly humans cannot breathe pure N2O (laughing gas), even though flames will burn in it.
