Instead of being a slave to gas prices... why not convert the kid of fuel your car uses?

Question

I saw a video about how every-day people are converting their cars to use alternative fuels.. there is a class at Santa Rose Jr College

It seems logical to me that if alot of people would convert the car they already have to an alternative fuel (of thier own choosing) then there would be >1< a substantial savings in fuels economy (some of these cars are getting 90 miles to the gallon of the fuel being used) >2< a long-term savings in fuel cost to the car-owner who made the switch >3< a serious depletion in the demand on fossil fuels >4< a rapid reduction in emissions

So.. why aren't there more classes to teach people how to make these changes to their own cars?... and is there a book or something for those that aren't able to attend that class (as in don't live anywhere near that area)

I&#039;ve been saying that for weeks now.

Converting your own car is the only solution. Waiting for government or the car companies is like waiting for Aliens to come and save us. If anyone out there wants to start their own business converting vehicles, the market is probably there already. And this would also be a great side job for auto repair shops. It&#039;s NOT THAT HARD.

What we really need now is a methanol distillery similar to the ones they have NOW for ethanol/corn likker.

That&#039;s easier said than done and it was tried back in the 1980&#039;s.  In the 1980&#039;s, companies emerged that converted cars to different types of fuel sources.  I remember even seeing a car at the Indiana State Fair that had been converted to run on coal.  The only problem is that after that the US government put a restriction on companies such as that stating that after the conversion the car has to emmit as few or less emissions than it did in its original state.  The non-ability to be able to do that is what killed all of those conversion companies.

Secondly, changing to other fuels such as bio-fuels does not increase the number of miles you get.  In fact, it normally decreases it.  E85 (85% ethanol - made from corn) gets about 90% the efficiency as far as gas mileage as gas.  Also, if you switched the car from gas to ethanol your emissions would go up instead of down.  Ethanol does produce more green house gases but because it is produced from plants and plants use CO2 it is considered good for the environment because theoretically the CO2 the fuel produces is counter balanced by the CO2 the plants use.  Many scientists argue of these facts.  Since ethanol produces more green house gases than gasoline, converting a car from gasoline to ethanol would be against the law for conversion companies unless the could come up with some sort of emmissions system that collects them making it comparable to gasoline.

The use of bio-fuels won&#039;t create a serious reduction in the demand for fossil fuels.  There are a lot of cars out there that will run on it (GM, Ford, and Chrysler have made a bunch) but since it is currently made from corn in the US, a strong demand would raise food prices.  If it could be made from plant stalks/cellulose then that would greatly increase the volume that could be produced and decrease the price and increase the availability of it.

Also you have to remember, there has to become a good distribution system for it.  That is just starting.  Then even after you get that in place you have to get people to start buying it.

As far as the 90 miles per gallon, that probably can&#039;t be done on your current car.  That is normally done on specially designed cars where the weight of the car is greatly reduced.  And if you did that, you&#039;d also give up a lot of horsepower on your car, meaning you couldn&#039;t accelerate fast at all.

My main point is that some things aren&#039;t as simple as they appear.

Also, I don&#039;t recommend trying to convert your car or trying run ethanol in it currently.  Ethanol eats away at rubber and it also needs a sensor to detect when it hits the engine so the engine can fire slightly differently to utilize it correctly.  If you use ethanol in a car that is not designed to run it you can ruin your engine.

It gives locations for the fuel and names some cars that will run on it.  It also answers many questions about the fuel.

I&#039;m not down on bio-fuels and solutions such as that.  In fact, I run my 2001 Chevy S-10 on E85.  It was about the first one GM made that runs on it.  Only the 4 cylinder for that model year does.  The 6 cylinder engine does not.  It states in the manual how you can tell.  On my it can be determined by the middle or 8th digit on the VIN.  Plus it also says it by the gas cap.

The best and fastest quick fix is to run synthetic oil in your engine,trans and rear. My Ford ranger gets 3 more Mpg&#039;s on the highway and you will change your oil less. If everyone nationwide got a few more Mpg&#039;s it would have a big impact
