I have a double major, but my geographical emphasis will be in Appalachia. How can I study the culture, most importantly, where do I start?

  1. A shovel might be a good start.

  2. You need to get a theoretical background - theories and theorists - to get published.  The best way to get that is to take the theory classes at your school.  To have an academic career you also need a degree that can get you into grad school.  Beyond that, obviously existing work in the region is important.  If there are advocacy or development projects in the region, you might be able to volunteer or get a low paying job with them and get field experience.  If not, you'd have to self-fund and plan your own project without guidance.  I hope you have friends from the region.
