Question:

Insulation Recommendation for Small Cabin?

by  |  earlier

I am going to be insulating and finishing the inside of my small cabin, and was wondering what others feel the best insulation material is. It gets seriously cold where I am - below zero. I would want the insulation to be serious. Please let me know what you think about r-value and ease of installation of some different types.

(My only quirk would be that I can't stand fiberglass batts - I'd use 'em if I had to though.)

  1. If you don't like fooling with fiberglass insulation (and who does) then you can use rigid foam insulation.    You cut it with a utility knife.  There are a couple of types.

    Here are different R-values:

R value of Blown in Cellulose Insulation is 3.70 per inch

R value of Fiberglass Insulation is 3.14 per inch

R value of Expanded Polystyrene is 4.00 per inch

  2. get the highest r rating but when you install it dont flatten it just put it in

  3. if  your cabin is small then it will heat up quickly and not require a lot of heat.  Older cabins usually have small rafters not allowing larger space for better R value.   Sprayed foam insulation is the best and will creat an airtight insulation system but expensive and has other considerations.  But  a good wood or pellit stove and cheap fiberglass insulation will keep you toasty warm and is best for its simplicity and cost.
