Question:

Insurance benefits after quitting job?

I'm going to be having a baby this summer and using my insurance benefits for my hospital stay. I'm covered under my current job. If I quit my job a few months after that and I had not finished paying off my hospital bill, (I'm going to be paying so much a month until it is paid off) would the bill change? I guess what I'm really asking is if the termination of my insurance would affect the hospital bill?

  1. Some companies offer their grooup benefits plans extending beyond the termination date if you have been there for a certain # of years.  One of my past employers kept my benefits in place 6 months after my termination date.

If you are quitting you may want to look at private individual health coverage...same thing as your group benefits only it just covers you (and your spouse if you want).

The only difference your hospital bill should make is that you will be paying out of your own pocket if you don't have insurance coverage.

  2. As long as your employed, your insurance will cover what its supposed to and you will ave your normal copays and all that. When you leave your job, your insurance is good till the end of the pay period that you contribute in so be careful to work your timing just right or you may end up with a biger expense than you can imagine. You probably are eligible for the insurance when you leave but you will ave to pay the cost of what the company pays and that could be very expensive.

  3. Your coverage goes from the effective (start) date of your policy through the termination (cancel) date, and bills are determined based on the coverage that you had as of the date the services were done.

As long as your coverage was active on the date the services were performed, quitting your job a few months down the road won't change your balance due for previous services.
