Question:

Insurance claim for cosmetic damage to a TV?

My wife lit a candle under my wall mounted LCD TV. It caught fire but luckily I discovered it before it got too serious. Anyway, the TV still works but the speaker on the bottom is melted and blackened by the fire. There are also hardened drips of plastic hanging from the bottom. Is this a valid insurance claim in the same way that cosmetic damage to furniture or carpet is? I am with Nationwide and the policy covers accidental damage.

  1. Your home insurance policy will cover you against fire damage, yes.

  2. Sounds valid to me. Fire in a claim and get the new TV

  3. Damage by fire is always covered. Check your deductible and call your agent.

  4. It is what would be considered as accidental damage and if you have cover for accidental damage to your contents then it would be covered. However cosmetic damage does not require you to buy a new television and the cost to repair the damage would probably be less than the excess. But you can always claim and see what happens as it may actually cost slightly more than the excess. Keep in mind that if it costs £300 to repair and your excess is £250 that you will only receive £50 and will have to pay out £250 yourself - so would it be worth it?
